A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Hey I hope you all had a great week! This week flew by again and I'm not even sure what happened haha. But I know that all of you were dying to know this, but the new Preach My Gospel (the book us missionaries use all day everday) came out on Thursday. All the missionaries in the mission are so hyped about it. Is that because we are content deprived? Probably, but let us have our fun.
So ever since I have gotten into this area we have been trying to get this recent convert of about 6 months, back to church. His name is Rick. For some reason a legit excuse keeps him from coming to church ever week. This guy has the worst luck. Last Sunday he went to go knock down a cactus the Saturday before, and the cactus fell on him and the cactus juice got in his eyes, so we went over and got the spines out of his arm. But apparently the cactus juice is very acidic so it was burning his eyes. A member then took him to the hospital. And he couldn't come to church the next day because his eyes were swollen shut. After that happened that entire week he was pretty butt hurt about the whole cactus thing, and his pride was stinging. So he went over this past Sunday morning and was going to show that cactus who was boss. We were at church and got a text from Rick that asked us if we could come over and help him with something after we were done with church. So we go over there and Rick is sitting in his car and he has cactus spines sticking out of his face and out of his arm. He looked like a porcupine. And all he said was "So...I went back to that cactus." He said that he went over and started beating the crap out of this big cactus, because he was mad, and he hit a piece off and it came around and wacked him in the face and knocked him into a smaller cactus. So Rick came back with his tale between his legs and had us take out all the spines again. So long story short Rick is yet to come to church because he has been fighting a cactus in his spare time. But we're gonna get him this week...hopefully.
This weeks spiritual thought is about our divine potential as children of a loving Heavenly Father. In Romans 8:16-17 it says "16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together." This is the apostle Paul telling us our potential to one day inherit all our Father in Heaven has and become like Him with Christ. Sometimes in life, it is hard to remember that divine potential, and our purpose on this earth. Sometimes we get discouraged thinking about our problems right now or things we have done in the past, or are scared of what is to come in this life. This life is meant to be hard so we can have a greater capacity to feel joy, and to learn and grow to become more like our Father in Heaven. But the thing that is so awesome about this whole experience, is that we don't have to do it alone! Jesus suffered and died for each one of us so we can feel joy and peace in this life. In 1 Nephi 19:9 of the Book of Mormon it says "9 And the world, because of their iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught; wherefore they scourge him, and he suffereth it; and they smite him, and he suffereth it. Yea, they spit upon him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and his long-suffering towards the children of men." Jesus went through everything for us, but why was He so "long-suffering"? It's because Jesus knew more than anyone, our divine potential. He suffered the pain and the guilt and the sorrow because He knew, as our older brother, who we really are as children of God. In Revelation 3:21, Jesus speaks of how we can reach our potential it says "21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne." The only way we can make it back home is to overcome, and the only way to overcome is turning to Jesus. He will carry us through this life if we let Him, and He will help you feel who you really are and what you can become. I know He lives and loves us so much! I hope you all have a great week!
